8 Day Itinerary
Day One
Fly to Amsterdam today, board Sound of Music and settle in to your cabin. Enjoy your first dinner on board, and perhaps step ashore to explore the Dutch capital.
Day Two
This morning you'll have the chance to discover Amsterdam's historic waterways on our optional canal cruise, or simply wander her streets, parks and squares, before Sound of Music heads into the Dutch waterways on her way to the Rhine.
Day Three
After a morning cruising upriver, Sound of Music will arrive in Cologne. Step ashore to stroll the cobbled streets of the city's altstadt (old town), browse the shops of Hohe Strasse, or join our optional excursion to the Eau de Cologne fragrance museum, before returning to the ship for dinner.
Day Four
This morning Sound of Music cruises into the Moselle and stops in Cochem. Explore the town or join an optional excursion to the mighty Reichsburg Castle that towers above it.
After dinner on board you'll also have the chance to sample some of the local Riesling and Spatlese on an optional wine-tasting.
Day Five
Enjoy a morning stroll around the lovely streets of Boppard, before Sound of Music heads into the Middle Rhine and through the narrow gorge beneath the Lorelei - a towering rock face named for the murmuring currents that surrounded it.
In the afternoon, Sound of Music docks in Rudesheim. Explore the narrow streets of this famous wine town, and perhaps join an optional excursion to see the bizarre mechanical musical instruments of Siegfried's Musikkabinett and enjoy another local wine tasting before dinner on board.
Day Six
Sound of Music sails south to Mainz, today. Discover the city's cathedral, its altstadt and its historic associations with Johannes Gutenburg and the printing press on an optional walking tour before the ship continues her lazy journey south.
Day Seven
Sound of Music's final mooring is a short coach ride away from the Alsatian capital, Strasbourg. Explore at leisure, or take to the waterways to discover the city's Petite France quarter on an optional canal cruise, before returning to Sound of Music for a special farewell dinner.
Day Eight
Bid farewell to Sound of Music and her crew, this morning, as you disembark in Basel and transfer to the airport to board your flight home.
Ship Information
Sleek, four-star superior Sound of Music offers a contemporary twist on traditional river cruising. Built in 2006, this beautifully maintained ship's bright, airy public spaces, two-tier observation deck and comfortable cabins provide a relaxing, convivial home for 122 passengers.
Wherever you choose to join her, Sound of Music’s sense of spaciousness will impress itself upon you, especially in the bright and airy lounge with its panoramic windows, and on the two-tiered top Observation deck, which comes into its own on summer days. With a crew of 38, and a staff that includes a Cruise Director and Cruise Manager, the enjoyment of the ship’s 122 passengers is assured, both aboard and ashore. On board, the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial, with the comfortable lounge and bar perfect places in which to pass a few hours, the aft restaurant the scene of some memorable meals each day, and the lounge the focus of the evening’s relaxed entertainment.
Beginning the season with a Lowland waterways cruise packed full of interest, Sound of Music then makes some classic journeys along the length of the mighty Rhine, between Amsterdam and Basel. The meandering Moselle, the glorious Blue Danube and the picture-book cities of the fairytale ‘Romantic Road’ are all visited during the summer when the two-tiered sun deck is the place to be.
